4 Signs Your Grout Has Seen Better Days
Have you taken a close look at the grout lines between your tiles lately? Grout plays an important role in protecting the underlying surface and providing stability for tiles. Over time, it can become discolored, crack, or wear away completely. If your grout is looking worse for wear, it may be time for regrouting. Here are some signs your grout has seen better days.
1. Faded or Discolored Grout
Grout is porous, so it easily absorbs dirt, grime, and moisture over time. This leads to fading or discoloration. White grout can turn yellow or brown. If cleaning doesn’t refresh the color, you likely need to regrout. According to Home Depot, the three most common types of grout are epoxy, sanded, and unsanded. Contact your local grouting service to determine which grout may be right for your home.
2. Cracked or Crumbling Grout
Grout is under a lot of pressure between tiles. Over time, it can develop hairline cracks or start crumbling away. If you notice cracks wider than 1/16 of an inch or missing grout, a regrout is necessary. Cracks allow water penetration that can lead to mold or damage. Loose grout also creates an unstable base for tiles that can lead to future cracking.
3. Hollow or Indented Grout
In addition to cracking, grout also naturally shrinks and contracts over time. This causes grout lines to become concave or indented. You may be able to feel that the grout is no longer flush with the tile edge. Hollow spots in the grout line make it easier for water and grime to accumulate. A regrout provides fresh, sealed grout.
4. Efflorescence on Grout
Efflorescence is a white, powdery deposit that can show up on grout. It’s caused when moisture pulls mineral salts from the cement in grout and pushes them to the surface. While harmless, efflorescence is a symptom of water penetration issues. If you see it on your grout, regrouting provides an opportunity to seal and waterproof the grout lines.
If your grout shows any of these signs of aging, don’t wait to regrout. With time, small issues can lead to mold, damaged tiles, and unsafe surfaces. Regrouting restores the look and function of your grout. For more information on our regrouting services, don't hesitate to reach out to our team at Grout Masters today.
